Lucas’ Helping Hands Advocacy Program!
February Update
Beginning Steps of the New Program:
We've kicked off the new Lucas’ Helping Hands Advocacy Program, updated the website
and Facebook
page, Lucas’ Helping Hands, and created an Instagram
page to help with social media outreach. We've also begun to put the final touches on our brochure and our logo. Fundraising and Grants:
We are beginning to research and apply for grants to help with the expansion of the program. We just wrapped up our Super Bowl Fundraiser raising $1,000
for the fund with an additional $75 from one of the winning squares donated to the Lucas’ Helping Hands program by Tom Lent. We are so thankful to every single person who helped fill 200 squares and raise money for local families. We are beginning to plan for our 3/21 fundraiser in honor of World Down Syndrome Day (March 21 st
). This is where a person will donate $21 to begin. For every three people they find to also donate $21 they get put into a drawing for one of three grand prizes. Our hope is that each person will continue to find three people (or six, or nine) to all donate $21. Please contact Heather if you are interested in being one of the first people to donate $21 and can commit to finding three other people to donate $21 each, heatherdonnell@anniesangels.org. Supporting Families:
We are beginning to support families in many ways: 1. Families with educational question and IEPs. 2. Helping families successfully advocate for their child to be moved to an “out of district” placement and be included into a classroom with children their own age. 3. Deliver feeding tube supplies to a family in need. 4. Giving information and guidance to families regarding the application process and information needed to apply for Katie Beckett Insurance (insurance for children that are considered to need “institutionalize level of care” but family income is more than Medicaid limitations) 5. Helping families admitted to Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth regarding policies with real food blended diets and feeding tubes. After being told there were “policies” being made to restrict serving a child a blended diet, we are working with families to be a part of that policy decision to advocate for families of tube fed children who also thrive on real blended food. Community Engagement:
We have met with Seacoast Gymnastics to plan for an adaptive class for children needing additional supports that Lucas’ Helping Hands can help sponsor. If you are interested in having your child participate in this class please contact me. heatherdonnell@anniesangels.org.

Black Bean Brownies Shared by Abby O'Neil of Abby O'neil Enterprises, LLC
Happy February!! The month of LOVE and KINDNESS. I am sharing one of our families favorite sweet treats that is filled with protein and super yummy. The kids and hubby have no idea these brownies are made from black beans!! Sending love and health to you and your family this February!!
Black bean brownies that are vegan, gluten free, and require just one bowl and about 30 minutes to prepare! Healthy, easy and delicious - the best kind of dessert. The recipe attached is amazing, however I wanted to share a few tweaks I make as well. We change the cocoa powder for chocolate isalean protein powder and the cane sugar for coconut sugar!! Either way, you will LOVE this sweet treat that you can share with the whole family!
Black Bean Brownies!!
Author: Minimalist Baker Recipe type: Dessert Cuisine: Vegan, Gluten Free Brownies Serves: 12
Ingredients
- 1 15 oz. (425 g) can (~ 1 3/4 cups) black beans, well rinsed and drained
- 2 large flax eggs
(2 heaping Tbsp (~16 g) flaxseed meal + 6 Tbsp (90
ml) water)
- 3 Tbsp (45 g) coconut oil, melted (or sub other oil of choice)
- 3/4 cup (72 g) cocoa powder (the higher quality the better)
- 1/4 tsp sea salt
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
- heaping 1/2 cup (105 g) organic cane sugar, slightly ground or pulsed in a food processor or coffee grinder for refined texture
- 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
- Optional toppings
: crush walnuts, pecans or semisweet chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (176 C).
- Lightly grease a 12-slot standard size muffin pan (not mini). Make sure you've rinsed and thoroughly drained your black beans at this point.
- Prepare flax egg by combining flax and water in the bowl of the food processor. Pulse a couple times and then let rest for a few minutes.
- Add remaining ingredients (besides walnuts or other toppings) and puree - about 3 minutes - scraping down sides as needed. You want it pretty smooth.
- If the batter appears too thick, add a Tbsp or two of water and pulse again. It should be slightly less thick than chocolate frosting but nowhere close to runny.
- Evenly distribute the batter into the muffin tin and smooth the tops with a spoon or your finger.
- Optional: Sprinkle with crushed walnuts, pecans or chocolate chips.
- Bake for 20-26 minutes or until the tops are dry and the edges start to pull away from the sides. I found mine took about 25.
- Remove from oven and let cool for 30 minutes before removing from pan. They will be tender, so remove gently with a fork. The insides are meant to be very fudgy, so don't be concerned if they seem too moist - that's the point. Plus, they're vegan so it doesn't really matter.
- Store in an airtight container for up to a few days. Refrigerate to keep longer.

STUDIO 8 GALLERY OPENING!
A friend and strong supporter of Annie's Angels is joining a new gallery in Newburyport, MA. Norma is always there to help us and I encourage you to take a trip to visit her at her new location, 1 Merrimac St. Newburyport, MA. Here are the details - Bill Local Artist Norma Torti Joins New Gallery in Newburyport , MA;
Uses Style and Techniques of European Masters to Bring Her Paintings to Life
Award-winning local artist Norma Torti will be exhibiting her work at the new Studio 8 Gallery in Newburyport, MA that opens March 1, Grand Opening is April 22.
Studio 8 Gallery is at 1 Merrimac Street #8. A student of European masters such as Rembrandt, Titian and Vermeer, Torti works within the “representational” style these artists used from the 16 th
through the 18 th
centuries. “My subjects are contemporary,” said Torti, “but the process and techniques I use date back to the 1600s and 1700s. It is the detailed drawing, and the underpainting, followed by multiple layers of color, that lets me achieve the classical realism of the Old Masters in my paintings.” Torti’s new work focuses on achieving the rich luminosity she sees when she looks at a painting by Ingres, David or Gentileschi. “Glazing is a technique they used where multiple layers of transparent paint are applied over a dry layer of opaque paint to create an ‘optical’ mixture.,” said Torti. “Glazing creates a unique shine-through, stained-glass effect that can’t be obtained by direct mixture of paint.” Torti’s paintings incorporate this glazing technique, which is seen in the sun shining through the crest of a wave or layered petals of a white amaryllis (see accompanying photos). “Revealing and sharing the truth about the beauty and goodness around me is why I create art,” Torti said. “Every day I feel a childlike freedom as I observe colors, textures, and contrasts of simple things, especially in nature. I love to transform an empty canvas into a full, detailed story of my subjects in living color. “My hope is that the subjects I choose and the realistic style of my work will invite people into each piece where they may connect to their own truth.” Torti’s award-winning paintings have been exhibited in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine, Tennessee, and Missouri, and were also published in two issues of a Boston publication, Studio Visit. Torti’s work, “White Amaryllis,” received a Merit Award by Manhattan Arts International for the “New Beginnings” 2017 Exhibit. Chosen from more than 1,600 entries, her work was showcased in the NOAPS International Exhibition and “Best of America 2016” Exhibition at the Addison Gallery in Orleans, MA.
