Carter Family Medical Fund

 
We are the Carter family: Shannon, Charlie, Jordan, Dakota, and Lincoln. 

Lincoln is our strong, vibrant 2.5 year old son who loves being outside just as much as his spot on the couch. He was born with a rare gene mutation, the same as his older brother, who has passed. Due to the gene mutation Lincoln relies on us for all his care. Along with the gene mutation, Lincoln was also diagnosed with cardiomyopathy at birth. When he was about 8 months old, we started to notice these spasm-like twitches he would do. With our knowledge, we had a feeling they were seizure related but also hoped they weren’t. We reached out to neurology, who sent us right to the ED for an emergency EEG to rule out seizures. 

Nov 10th, 2022, we received devastating news that the spasms we were seeing were, in fact, seizures. They weren’t just any seizures, though. What we were seeing were infantile spasms. Our journey with another diagnosis  began, and we trudged forward with treatment in hopes of controlling them. We were able to get these spasms controlled for 3 months, and then Lincoln started to have other types of seizures, along with the return of the spasms. We continue to try and control this nasty beast called epilepsy that has taken some of Lincoln's abilities. 

Lincoln has multiple therapies a week, along with appointments. He sees specialists locally as well as in Boston. He has and will continue to have hospitalizations that are unplanned due to respiratory needs and seizures. He has multiple planned surgeries coming up this year as well. 


We’ve been through this life before having to juggle all the things, and we know the financial strain it puts on a family. We also know how hard it is to ask for help. That being said, Lincoln has many needs that, while we can provide for most of them, there will be some that we might need help with. Lincoln is going to continue to grow, and with that comes new equipment needs. Our biggest need will be a wheelchair van and home modifications. These are 2 bigger things that we hope to raise money for over the next year. Other things this fund will help with are things not covered by insurance and hospital stays (such as parking, food, and gas).


We will do anything and everything to include Lincoln and to give him the most typical life the best we can. With help from our community, family, and friends, we hope to make his life easier and fuller.
