Lucas’ Helping Hands is Now an Advocacy Program!
Annie’s Angels is proud to announce that as of January 2017, Lucas’ Helping Hands fund has become Lucas’ Helping Hands Advocacy Program.
Lucas’ Helping Hands fund was created in honor of Lucas, a young boy living in Rochester. The fund was started to raise money for a special bed for Lucas to keep him safe at night. From there, the family continued with multiple fundraisers each year to help not only Lucas but also other families with some of the specialized medical supplies needed. The fund has helped local families with gas cards, electric bills, strollers, adaptive clothing, medical supplies, and more. “I know first-hand the struggles that come along with raising a child with special needs,” says Heather Donnell, Lucas’ mom and founder of Lucas’ Helping Hands. “It takes a lot of strength, patience, dedication, love, and unfortunately a lot of money.” Heather also knows how unbelievably lonely and isolating raising a child with special needs can be. “I want for Lucas’ Helping Hands to be able to provide the emotional and educational support that it requires to live this life successfully. I want families to know that they are not alone in this great big world. That someone else out there is struggling to face the day too.” Heather decided the best way for her to reach those families was through an advocacy program. Lucas’ Helping Hands Advocacy Program’s mission is to provide educational and emotional support to families of children struggling through a life-threatening disease, illness or disability. Educational Support
: Lucas’ Helping Hands will help families find resources when they don’t know where to turn for assistance. Heather’s personal experience and education has given her the tools and knowledge that she will share with other local families. Family resources include local area agencies that provide services to children with developmental disabilities or that help answer questions that arise when faced with needing additional supplies or equipment that you don’t need for a typically developing child or adult. Emotional Support:
Heather believes that the best way to help families facing challenging times is to connect them with others experiencing the same challenges and build relationships. Lucas’ Helping Hands will provide information to connect families with local support groups so no one feels alone. “Support groups let parents know that before they can care for their child sufficiently they first need to care for themselves,” she says. “It is easy for someone to say “I understand how hard this is for you” but for a family to meet someone who truly understands because they live it too is invaluable. It’s okay to be in “survival” mode for a short while, but then you need to live!” Lucas’ Helping Hands Advocacy Program enhances Annie’s Angels mission to help local families that are struggling financially through life threatening diseases, illnesses, or disabilities by connecting neighbor to neighbor, friend to friend, and business to business. The program will unite Angel Families and provide emotional and educational support after life changing events so they can get back on their feet and support themselves financially, physically and emotionally. Families can move mountains if you put them together! If you have questions or would like to help with fundraising for this mission please email heatherdonnell@anniesangels.org
Learning About Reiki
Contributed by Paula Hogan
Research Supports the Effectiveness of Reiki
Recent research studies support the effectiveness of Reiki in patients dealing with all types of cancer, including breast cancer. For example, according to Penn medicine, the Abramson Cancer Center has released reports showing that, when combined with traditional treatments, the use of Reiki can reduce stress levels, alleviate anxiety, improve relaxation and reduce perceptions of pain in patients with cancer. Likewise, according to the American Cancer Society, one research study showed that cancer patients participating in Reiki sessions were less likely to experience pain than those who were not participating in Reiki sessions.
Anecdotal evidence provides additional support for Reiki’s benefits. Patients have reported feeling more relaxed after Reiki treatments, even in the later stages of cancer. Patients have also reported feeling more mentally and emotionally balanced because of Reiki treatments. Some patients have even said that participating in Reiki treatments reduced the side effects they experienced because of cancer treatment, including nausea and vomiting.
Benefits of Reiki for Breast Cancer Patients
Although Reiki is not a substitute for traditional cancer treatment, it may provide a number of benefits for patients with breast cancer. This technique can be used for patients who have just learned of their diagnosis, patients who are already involved in treatment protocols and those who are recovering from breast cancer. Some of the benefits of Reiki treatment for individuals with breast cancer may include:
Reduction in sensations of pain,
Improved mood,
Less stress,
Better quality of sleep.
Reiki is a wonderful, non-invasive, gentle, comforting technique that has long-lasting results.

Happy New Year Bring on 2017! Shared by Abby O'Neil of Abby O'neil Enterprises, LLC
With the holiday behind us I thought sharing a yummy "healthier" and clean cookie recipe would be great! These cookies are yummy! Enjoy!
Soft Baked Almond Flour Chocolate Chip Cookies
Ingredients:
2 tablespoons solid coconut oil 3 tablespoons pure maple syrup 1 large egg 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 2 cups almond flour or almond meal (I have used both with success) 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon fine-grain sea salt 1/2 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips + more for topping if desired (we like Enjoy Life dairy-free chocolate chips)
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Set aside.
2. Add the coconut oil and the pure maple syrup to a large bowl. If the oil is very hard, microwave for a few seconds until soft but not melted. Stir briskly with a whisk until the syrup and oil are mixed together – this may take a minute or two. Add the egg and vanilla and whisk together until combined.
3. In a medium bowl, stir together the almond flour, baking soda, and salt. Add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients and stir together with a wooden spoon until combined. Stir in 1/2 cup chocolate chips.
4. Scoop mounded tablespoonfuls onto the cookie sheet, spacing about two inches apart. Press down gently with your fingers to flatten slightly. Top each with a few additional chocolate chips, if desired.
5.Bake until set and the edges are golden brown, 8-9 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool for about 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Cookies keep well in an airtight container at room temperature for 4-5 days. (recipe & photo courtesy of kitchentreaty)
