An Update and a Look Ahead
Bill DaGiau
Nine days ago I got a private message on Facebook from Paula Stanca at the 401 Tavern. It said, "Hi Bill, need to call you asap... Desi wants to talk to you...call me..." So I did what smart people do when Desi wants you, I called!

What happened next was incredible. What happened next was life changing forOur Volunteers saying goodbye to truck 1so many in Texas but what happened next was life changing for many right here in New Hampshire.  What happened next was YOU SHOWED UP in a BIG way! Donors from as far as Boston, Manchester, York and as close as next door showed up. What happened next was, we filled a 53 foot trailer with pallets of food, water, cleaning products, baby supplies and supplies for the elderly. We filled pallets wApproaching TXith medical kits, mops, brooms, paper towels and toilet paper. We filled a separate 28The unloadfoot trailer with pet supplies and sent it off to a shelter that was receiving rescue pets from the Houston area. What's happening now is another 53 foot trailer is about half full and waiting to be topped off at the 401 Tavern and will heading to TX. What happened next was, we filled hearts with smiles and souls with joy.

I always knew what the seacoast was capable of but this past week blew me away. I met some old friends and made some new ones. We were there from dawn til dusk, in the heat, in the cold, while it showered then poured, as the thunder and lightning crashed, you all showed up and all I can say is thank you.

As the volunteers in Houston received your well wishes and unloaded your packages of love, they sent back all they could to say thank you, though no thanks was necessary.

As I head out to help fill the final trailer I share this thanks with the staff of The 401 Tavern, Desi & Paula, the Dan Healy Foundation, Shannon Keane, ROTC of Hampton and all the people who came out to support this effort, to all the businesses who donated and to the Angel volunteers, thank you!

As we move further into September, this year's goal for Reach the Beach is $30,000.00.
Reach the Beach, a "200-ish miles in 24 hour"  run  will take place on September 15 & 16. Thisyear Team Wine O'Clock @ The 401 Tavern will be running to benefit Annie's Angels! Paula Stanca of The 401 Tavern said, "We're inspired by the work of ANNIE'S ANGELS MEMORIAL FUND INC and wanted to support them by raising money as part of our participation in 2017 Ragnar Relay Reach the Beach. Please help us help them by giving whatever you can using the 'Give Now' button. The more people that know about ANNIE'S ANGELS MEMORIAL FUND INC, the greater their impact, so please also spread the word by sharing our page with your friends and family. Thank you in advance for your generosity, it means a lot!" Thank you Paula, Desi and everyone participating on Team Wine O'Clock @ The 401 tavern.

Back to School Kale Chips

It is BACK TO SCHOOL and I know I am always looking for fun and quick snacks for the kiddos. Here is a fun and easy recipe you can play around with and involve the kids in too!

Kale Chips are a fun and easy snack for the whole family. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

  • 1 large bundle curly green or purple kale
  • 1-2 Tbsp (15-30 ml) melted coconut or avocado oil
  • Seasonings of choice (i.e. pinch sea salt, 1 tsp cumin powder, 1 tsp chili powder, 1 tsp  curry powder , 1 Tbsp  nutritional yeast , etc.)

Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 225 degrees F (107 C). Use convection bake if you have it to speed cooking time and help chips crisp up even more.
  2. Rinse and thoroughly dry kale, then tear into small pieces and discard any large stems.
  3. Add to a large mixing bowl and drizzle with oil and seasonings of choice. Toss thoroughly to combine, using hands to distribute the oil and seasonings evenly.
  4. Spread the kale over 2 large baking sheets, ensuring the kale touches as little as possible to help them crisp while baking.
  5. Bake for 15 minutes, then turn the pans around and lightly toss/stir kale to ensure even baking. Bake for 5-10 minutes more, or until kale is crispy and very slight golden brown. Watch closely as it can burn easily.
  6. Remove from oven and let cool slightly - chips will crisp up even more once out of the oven.
  7. Enjoy immediately! Best when fresh. Store leftovers covered at room temperature for 2-3 days.

LHH & JCP Perfect Together

Lucas’ Helping Hands partnered with JCPenney at the Lilac Mall in Rochester for a backpack drive. Together, they collected over 130 backpacks in just two short weeks!!! Customers were able to purchase a bag for $7 to be donated to our program. The associates at the store rallied together and bought school supplies and clothing to put inside of the backpacks. However, with 130+ bags there simply wasn’t enough. The You Matter Too program helped to sponsor some supplies for backpacks so the siblings were able to receive a backpack as well. Back to school shopping can be extremely expensive with how quickly children grow each year, the amount of supplies that are needed, etc.

We helped more than four other organizations that we partner with and work with individuals with disabilities. Some of these backpacks went to families whose parents are firefighters, police men and women, and parents that are just trying to get through each day without their child having a seizure or a visit to the hospital. There were many tears of relief from parents and pure happiness from children for receiving these backpacks.

Thank you to ALL of our supporters that purchased a backpack or shared this event with others. Because of your generosity our community made a difference!
