An Update and a Look Ahead
Bill DaGiau
Are you a sports fan? Have you ever imagined leading your team to victory? It's fall in New England so I'll use Tom Brady as an example. You're watching the game and imagine yourself as Brady, leading the team down the field.

Picture it...It's the 4th quarter, 3rd and long and your down by a touchdown. Brady takes the snap, he stands tall in the pocket he has time but no one is open! Brady takes a knee and the game is over!! That's not what you pictured right?

THIS is what you pictured... It's the 4th quarter, 3rd and long and your down by a touchdown. Brady takes the snap, he stands tall in the pocket. Brady has time! Brady lets it fly! Brady threads the needle to Amendola for the TOUCHDOWN AND THE WIN!!! You're a hero!! (but only in your imagination)

Now picture this. Thanks to the support of our community Annie's Angels has been fortunate enough to help more families so far in 2017 than any other entire year. As 2017 enters the 4th quarter, it's 3rd and long at Annie's Angels. Are you "Take a Knee Tom" or "Thread the Needle Tom"? We need you to take this snap, stand tall and be a hero for real. Please make a contribution at AnniesAngels.org so we can finish strong in 2017 and blast into 2018.

While we're talking about heroes,  Reach the Beach, a "200-ish miles in 24 hour"   run took place on September 15 & 16. Team Wine O'clock at The 401 Tavern, a brave group of runners, raised nearly $6,000.00 to benefit Annie's Angels! Thanks to Paula and Desi for making this happen and thanks to the entire team for your commitment.

Still on the subject of heroes, these past two weeks have been special. JoAnn Clark and I aren't usually involved in the adoption process or the meeting of veteran and companion. Through a series of emails and messages Chris' Pets For Vets was honored to match two veterans with two companion animals through private breeders! The meetings, divine intervention. The series of events and contacts could not have been better planned for a Hallmark movie yet the pieces fell into place and two families made whole! I overheard one comment through one of the connections. The wife said, " I haven't seen you smile like this in so long." It was truly heart warming. Thanks to the veterans for their service and thanks to their families for their sacrifice

Baked Apple Chips

Happy October!!

Here is a super simple yet yummy and easy snack for everyone! Make it extra fun by picking the apples yourself!

Baked Apple Chips

Gather 6-12 of your favorite apples, we love granny smith at our house.

Thinly slice the apples, sprinkle with cinnamon and your favorite sugar, ( I recommend coconut sugar as a healthier alternative)

Lightly grease a pan and lay the apple slices out.

Bake at 200 degrees for 2.5-3 hours. BOOM a healthy and easy snack to enjoy!!

Looking of a way to help the whole family live healthier and make healthier lifestyle choices? Looking for some education on living health? I am always open and available for free consultations.

Cheers to healthy living mind, body, and soul!

School is Back in Session!
heatherdonnell@anniesangels.org

School is back in session! For many families this makes their lives easier and more routine. Many go to school, have extra activities after, and get to begin their fall sports! For families that have children with any special medical or educational needs this means many individualized educational plan meetings (IEP) to be sure your child's needs are being met, making numerous phone calls to be sure all of the doctor's orders are sent to the school for the nurse to administer medications and feeds through your child's feeding tube, and monitoring their progress to ensure they have all the accommodations in place to gain the skills they need to be successful at school and in their community. It can be entirely overwhelming for parents and families and unfortunately the rest of your life does not stand still during this transition. If only it was that easy!

As a parent of a child that cannot advocate for himself, there is a lot of pressure put on us to ensure he has what he needs. Clear communication with the school is so important. It's important for you to know what is happening, how it is happening, and the outcomes from that. For us, we worked with the school to create a document to be filled out each day to capture the amount of information we need. You can do that too!

It is also important to know that your child that experiences a disability is entitled to be included and have access to every school related event that their typical peers do. This includes activities within the classroom, lunchroom, and special activities too. Sometimes that means advocating for additional accommodations and supports to successfully access these activities and events. It is up to YOU to initiate these conversations.

Often times children with a disability are pulled out of class or not included in special activities simply because parents aren't aware of what is available. It is important for parents and teachers to understand how much value it brings to not only the child that requires additional support but also the other typically developing peers in the class when all children are included together. One of the best things for parents to do is network with other parents. I've been told recently "you don't know what you don't know." This is so true!

Know that you are not alone. There are other parents have experienced some of the same challenges that you are experiencing and have learned so much along the way and are eager to help you too. We know how lonely this life can be, but we also know that you don't have to feel alone. You are not alone!

If you are experiencing challenges in your child's transition back to school please reach out to us. We are happy to support you and provide the resources you need. If you are looking to connect with another parent within your school district or someone that has experienced what you are facing we are happy to help make those connections as well. You could email or call!
