Annie's Angels Program Information

Updates and a Look Ahead
Bill DaGiau

It is my happy to report that between August 1 and 31, 2020 Annie’s Angels has received and assisted with 24 requests! This number is down 14% from last August but please remember, after speaking with some of our visiting home healthcare aids, they are meeting with only half their normal patients and some are not meeting with ANY patients. Also, other partnering agencies such as Families First and Seacoast Mental Health, and others are seeing less patients due to COVID – 19. Patients are also scared to visit a doctor or clinic. While this may be good for our current bank account, we will be hit hard later this fall when the aids and clinics begin seeing more patients. This winter will also be a challenge.

Now, I'd like to share a couple stories that YOU helped give a happy ending. These situations could have gone wrong quickly but with your support, we literally saved lives!

In August, we adopted out four companion animals partnering with Lakes Region Humane Society and Pope Memorial Humane Society. This is a big deal because the rescue shelters were closed for a time and are beginning to re-open and see potential adoptive families. Save a Pet; Save a Vet.

T’s doctor suspected abnormalities on her liver, gallbladder, and lungs. He prescribed a CT scan. This procedure comes with a $750.00 co-pay that T could not afford. T was going to cancel the appointment! It was more important to be able to eat, pay rent and the rest of the bills than have these tests. T’s case worker reached out for help and today T has had the necessary tests and is undergoing treatment that is covered by insurance. YOU allowed Annie’s Angels helped save T’s life.

I'd like to extend a special thanks to Doreen Soares, you'll notice her 2020 Year of Giving ad below. Doreen had another closing in August and so made another $100.00 donation to Annie's Angels. This brings her total donations so far to $400.00 in 2020! Thank you Doreen for your support.

Thanks to Ocean State Job Lot for their donation of a $350.00 gift card to help us with what ever we may need from OSJL to further our Angel mission!

The Annie's Angels Luau 5K was a success. We had 41 participants, some runners, some walkers that raised $4400.00. If you took pictures; selfies, group shots, whatever, please upload them to social media using #anniesangelsluau5k so everyone can see the fun you had and will join us next year! A special thanks to Logan's Run for filling our bellies after the event!

Michelle's Tees & More  on our Annie's Angels website.

Michelle is a New Hampshire state advocate for disability rights. She resides in Portsmouth, NH in an independent living apartment designed for people with disabilities called Betty's Dream. Michelle is a watercolor sketch artist and owns a small business called "Watercolors By Michelle". Despite an active lifestyle, Michelle faces challenges living with a rare disease (Charcot Marie Tooth Syndrome). She has to have full time support to maintain her day.

Michelle has out of pocket expenses for maintaining her motorized wheelchair and medical equipment, if not covered by her insurance. Michelle, with the help of Annie's Angels raised enough funds last year to purchase her own 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan. She recently received help from Annie's Angels to get new batteries for her transfer device (a vital necessity to transfer out of her wheelchair) and safety features installed to her motorized wheelchair.

In the spirit of giving, Michelle is partnering with Annie's Angels selling her "New Hampshire T-shirt ' s". The T-shirts feature Michelle's art images with the "New Hampshire logo. A percentage of T-shirt sales will benefit Annie's Angels as well!

These are the stories I hear daily. These are the people, that TOGETHER we help daily. Please don't let another day go by without acting. Please make a tax deductible donation today.

Annie's Helping Hands Program

By Bill DaGiau
This is the second in a series describing and explaining each of our Angel Programs.

What is Annie's Helping Hands?

Annie’s Angels Memorial Fund established Annie’s Helping Hands in 2012. Annie’s Helping Hands is a multidisciplinary holistic oncology program. Participants of the program are eligible to receive Massage, Reiki and Meditation therapies as well as other holistic therapies for up to 6 months. Services are provided by professionals you select and must have specialized training in oncology in their field.

Our Mission
Our mission is to offer a clean, relaxing environment where cancer patients can step away from the stress of their day to day life, be pampered in luxury, and find relief from emotional and physical pain.

Who Can Participate in the Program?
The Annie’s Helping Hands program is open to individuals who are currently receiving cancer treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy, are within a three-month period of ending treatments, or are currently preparing for or recovering from cancer related surgery.

How Do These Services Help Clients With Cancer?
Each of the services offered through the Annie’s Helping Hands program helps clients with cancer in a unique way. Below is a list of some of the greatest benefits of these services.

Massage
Massage uses the power of touch to help cancer clients reconnect to their bodies and feel whole again. Clients have reported reduced pain and improved elasticity to scar and radiation sites. It has also been widely reported by cancer survivors that massage gave them the ease and peace needed to sleep better at night. Reduced pain, improved sleep and peace of mind all help boost the immune system, which can aid in recovery.

Reiki
Reiki is a gentle, ancient practice used to stimulate and reset energy within the body. This is a hand-off approach to readjust the body’s magnetic pulse or frequency, which promotes overall wellness. Reiki evokes relaxation, decreases stress, and renews the body’s ability to self-heal and rebuild damaged cells.

Meditation
Meditation helps students learn how to cope with feelings and fears in a private, one on one environment. Three separate techniques are offered through the program. Transformation Meditation, Guided Imagery and Visualization. These techniques help the student learn how to control thoughts, look toward a more positive outcome and escape to a quiet, peaceful state. Meditation helps reduce insomnia and stress, increase inner peace and achieve a healthier mental, emotional and physical well being.

How Many Sessions Do Program Participants Receive?
Participants of Annie’s Helping Hands can take part in one, two or all three services offered through the program. The following guidelines have been established to ensure the program’s availability to as many clients as possible.

Massage
Participants of the program can receive one (1) one-hour or (2) half-hour massages per month for 6 months. Clients must present a medical note of clearance from their physician before services can be considered by Annie’s Helping Hands.

Reiki
Participants of the program are eligible to receive one (1) one-hour or two (2) half-hour Reiki sessions per month for 6 months. Since Reiki is not a hands-on service, clients are not required to provide a medical note of clearance.

Meditation
Participants of the program are eligible to receive (1) one-hour meditation &/or relaxation class per month for 6 months. Since meditation is not a hands-on service, clients are not required to provide a medical note of clearance.

CHRIS’ PETS FOR VETS
By Jo-Ann Clark

Pet Health & Welfare

As any pet owner, our pet’s health and welfare is very important.  Being an advocate for your pet by having the knowledge to perform simple grooming procedures that could also save in veterinary costs. This article will offer guidance as to care of your pet’s ears.

Cleaning Your Pet’s Ears
A regular grooming routine is a must for our animal companions. Besides keeping your pet looking and feeling the best way possible, grooming your pet regularly allows you to get familiar with his or her body so that should anything out of the ordinary be noticed, you can seek help immediately without wondering if your pet was always this way. It also provides you with a great human-animal bonding experience.
Brushing, bathing, nail trimming, and dental care are all a part of an essential grooming regimen. However, there is another part of essential grooming that often gets left out, and that is ear cleaning. It can seem like a daunting task to clean your pet’s ears, but it is often a necessity.
To help make ear cleaning easier, we’ve provided a few tips on how to clean your pet’s ears safely and effectively without stressing out your beloved pet.

Inspect
Check your pet’s ears regularly. If you notice any of the following, it may be time to contact your vet.
  • Odor
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Discharge
  • Scabs
  • Excess wax
  • Scratching, head shaking, or head tilting.
Other Considerations
  • Not all dogs need their ears cleaned. For some, frequent cleaning may cause irritation and other problems. Speak with your veterinarian about what is best for you and your dog.
  • Depending on your cat’s groom habits and environments, often ear cleaning is unnecessary. Cats are generally excellent self-groomers. However, if you notice any wax, dirt, build-up, or debris, it may be time for a cleaning.
  • Trimming excessive ear hair can help prevent ear infections and wax build-up. Avoid sticking scissors into your pet’s ear. If you are uncomfortable doing it yourself, have a veterinarian or groomer take care of it for you
  • Schedule regular veterinary exams so your vet can assess your pet’s health and diagnose any issues early. Your vet will check your pet’s ears and can help give you further instructions for cleaning and care.
How to Clean Your Pet’s Ears
If your pet can easily become restless or distressed, try to calm him or her with treats, affection, or another distraction. It is best to collect your supplies ahead of time so that you don’t have to scramble to find what you need during the cleaning. You will need cotton pads or balls, a veterinary-approved ear cleaner, and a towel. Do not use hydrogen peroxide or alcohol-based cleaners as they can dry out the ear canal and cause irritation. Do not use Q-Tips or anything with a pointed tip to clean your pet’s ears as you may damage the ear canal and cause other health problems for your pet.
It is generally easier for you to position your pet with his or her backside facing you. Gently pull on the ear flap and fill the canal with an approved-veterinarian ear cleaning solution. Do not stick the applicator into the ear canal or allow it to touch your pet’s ear as it may spread bacteria.
Massage the base of the ear for at least 30 seconds to help the solution work its way in. You will hear a squishing sound as the product dislodges debris and buildup. Allow your pet to shake his or her head and expel the solution. Use the cotton ball or towel to absorb any remaining solution on the outer part of the ear canal. Repeat until the cotton pad is clean.
Again, not all pets will need their ears cleaned frequently. Speak with your veterinarian to help you come up with an ear cleaning routine that works best for you and your pet. For more information on ear cleaning for your pet, please contact North Hampton Animal Hospital today.
