Your very welcome Alena & Roderick...It's our honor!
When I met Roderick, one of the first things he told me was, “I need new glasses.” He had old ones, which almost made things worse. I noticed he would take them off if needed to sign something, or he would look at me and say, “Who are you?” Not because he didn’t know, but rather couldn’t see. I asked him for patience but reassured him I was determined to find a way.
Getting an eye exam wasn’t that hard, but finding out that it would cost nearly $500 to get the glasses made it a “mission nearly impossible.” The value was not in the frames but in the lenses, so we couldn’t “cheat the price”. We thought of different ways, but saving up would take months, probably more. But then our case manager told us about Annie’s Angels.
We filled out the application and in less than 24 hours received a call. There were no buts, maybes, or lengthy paperwork. The answer was a simple “Yes. We will help. We will pay for the young man’s new glasses.” I can’t even tell you how fast we jumped in the car and drove to the vision center. When they couldn’t take a payment over the phone, Bill from Annie’s Angels personally made the trip to pay for it. In less than a week, we were back to pick up the order.
We were all in tears, watching how overwhelmed my client was. He was so anxious, we had to take a few moments to breathe. He shared with me, he knows what to do when bad things happen, but is not sure how to handle the nice ones. The act of kindness not only gave him his vision back but showed him that he matters. He can now not only see the steps walking down the stairs and meals on his plate, but he is also learning to accept the good in life. On the way home, he asked me, “How do I show I’m happy?” I think the smile shows it all.
Thank you Annie’s Angels. A. & R.
