Sabrinas Strides

Sabrina is a happy, enthusiastic, and spirited 13 year old with a laugh that makes you smile and warms your heart. She has sass, spunk and brings so much joy to our lives. Sabrina lives with Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy, Seizure Disorder and Cortical Vision Impairment. Sabrina had to fight for her life even before she was born. She was in fetal distress and born 9 weeks early. She spent the first few months of her life in the NICU. While she fought for her life, she received numerous blood and platelet transfusions among other medical treatments to keep her alive while doctors worked to determine the cause of her life-threatening medical emergencies. She was finally diagnosed with Juvenile Xanthrogranuloma at 7 weeks old. Once treatment started, thankfully, she was on the road to recovery and spend another 5 weeks hospitalized. But she is faced with lifelong challenges as a result of an extensive brain hemorrhage. Her Cerebral Palsy affects her gross and fine motor skills, coordination, balance, as well as, causing developmental delays, cortical vision impairment and life-threatening seizures.

Sabrina has had many hurdles in her life and has a long and challenging road ahead of her. She uses a wheelchair and walks with assistance in a gait trainer. She uses a stander to help strengthen her legs. She requires assistance for transfers/mobility and activities of daily life. She receives botox and phenol injections to reduce the tightness in her legs that imped her mobility. Despite all of her challenges she is a happy, fun-loving, and determined child who continues to amaze people. Because of Sabrina’s physical limitation and lack of accessibility, she’s not experience things other people can. Sabrina has demonstrated, with the right therapy, she is capable of making progress and shows that she has so much potential.

With the right therapies, the hope for Sabrina is to get stronger, improve her balance and progress her walking and balance to be more functional while improving her ability to help herself with daily activities. Sabrina was making great progress until two years ago when she had spinal surgery. She became so weak she wasn’t able bear weight on her legs or walk. She started an intensive schedule of therapy and started making progress. Then Covid hit and therapies stopped. Once things reopened, we were not able to resume the same intensive schedule. It’s the non-traditional therapies that have the greatest impact on Sabrina. Unfortunately, insurance doesn’t cover all of these. The hope is to be able to provide Sabrina the opportunities to become more functional and to be able to help support her body easing the daily strain of providing full physical support within our home and beyond. While also giving her the opportunity to gain some independence. With therapies, practice, and home modification, Sabrina will have the opportunities to be able to become as independent as possible. Sabrina needs equipment that insurance doesn’t cover. As well as home modification to allow her access to necessary areas of our home with her assistive devices.

Please consider helping Sabrina’s road to independence by making a tax-deductible donation to help with therapies, equipment, and modifications.

Thank you! We are eternally grateful for your support.
