Annie’s Angels Program Information

An Update and a Look Ahead
Bill DaGiau

Back to school, back to work, back to “normal operations” for us all. That’s the way things usually go into Fall and Winter but for our Angel families “normal operations” has an entirely different meaning. During the month of August, because of your generosity, Annie’s Angels was able to help many families with “normal operations.” Here are a few examples:
Our first family has an amazingly awesome little boy who happens to have autism. He’s 3 years old and likes to wander. If you look away for a second, he’s gone! The police had to be called twice to help look for him after he wandered off. The family and their social worker, being very concerned contacted many local and national Autism organizations but no one would help. They heard about Annie’s Angels and reached out. Thanks to YOU, we purchased a tracker called AngelSense. This GPS device was developed for young wanderers and elderly with Alzheimer and Dementia in case they wandered off. Thanks to YOU we also bought a one year subscription to the AngelSense tracking app so this young family can have a full year of peace knowing their son can’t wander off.

The next Angel that YOU helped is an elderly woman who needed dentures. She was able to get her teeth removed but her coverage wouldn’t pay to get new teeth put in. How was she supposed to eat Mr. Insurance Co? She was referred to us by one of our supporters and after looking at all the options for her case with her dentist office, they submitted a grant application to the NH Dental Society which was approved! Because of YOU we were able to pay her deductible and now her new teeth are on the way!

Stories like this are our “normal operations.” Thanks to YOU we’re able to continue being a light in the darkness of disease, illness or disability each and every day. Thanks to YOU we are able to ease some of the stresses that come with a doctors diagnosis. We just can’t do this good work without YOUR support. I ask that you please consider making a tax deductible contribution to Annie’s Angels. As we draw closer to our year end fundraising campaign, please consider making your tax deductible contribution to help an Angel Family in need. Visit today!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank The Wireless Zone Foundation For Giving and Stratham Verizon Wireless Store for their generous donation of 20 backpacks full of school supplies and a grant of $1000.00 to help Annie’s Angels further our mission.

Finally, it’s save the date time! Our 12th Anniversary Heavenly Ball will be Saturday, March 9th at the Ashworth. We have some great changes we’re planning so SAVE THE DATE! Tickets go on sale December 1st in time for Christmas. Also, the 2019 Rye By The Sea is scheduled for June 1, 2019. Registration will open on October 1. We have some fun changes there as well so register early.

Parents of a special needs child have special needs, too.

As the parent of a special needs child, you know how rewarding—and challenging—caring for your loved one can be. And even though you’ve got it all under control right now, you can’t help worrying about the future. After all, someday your child will have to go on without you, and you know how expensive it can be to maintain your child’s quality of life. That’s why a special needs trust (also called a supplemental needs trust) can be a tremendous source of comfort.

A special needs trust is a legal instrument that helps concerned parents like you set money aside for your child’s future care. Best of all, it does it without reducing your child’s eligibility for public assistance programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, and Supplemental Social Security Income (SSI). For obvious reasons, it is important that it be prepared with the input of qualified tax and legal advisors. Let’s take a look at how these trusts work:

A trust protects your child’s assets—and eligibility.
If your child relies on government assistance, it’s important to know that many of these programs have strict asset limitations (usually $2,000). A special needs trust can keep your child from exceeding these limits by making sure any assets he or she would otherwise inherit go directly into the trust. That way, you don’t have to worry about jeopardizing your child’s eligibility for assistance, and you can be sure that any money you earmark for his or her care will be used exclusively for that purpose.

You can fund a trust with a wide variety of assets.
You can use almost any combination of assets to fund your special needs trust: stocks, bonds, real estate—even the proceeds from a life insurance policy (provided you name the trust as the beneficiary). In fact, a whole or universal life insurance policy can be a cost-effective way to fund the trust, since they both pay a death benefit (provided premium requirements are met) and any cash value they generate will continue to grow tax-deferred until your death.

Make sure you use a qualified professional.
Your child’s future is too important to leave anything to chance. While special needs trusts have been around for years, they are complex legal instruments that have to be set up properly. Be sure to work with an attorney who has plenty of experience in this area, as well as a thorough knowledge of wills and estates.

It takes a special person to care for a special needs child—and to adequately prepare for the child’s future. With a special needs trust, you can take comfort in the fact that you have done everything you can to give your child the resources he or she will need to lead a long and happy life.
