Sabrina is a happy, enthusiastic and spirited 8 year with a laugh that makes you smile and warms your heart. She has sass, spunk and brings so much joy to our lives. Sabrina lives with Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy, Seizure Disorder and Cortical Vision Impairment. She is a fighter with drive. Sabrina had to fight for her life even before she was born. Sabrina was born 9 weeks early (emergency C-section) and spent the first few months of her life in the NICU. Doctors were unable to determine the cause of her life threatening medical complications. While she fought for her life, she received numerous blood and platelet transfusions among other medical treatments. She was finally diagnosed with Juvenile Xanthrogranuloma at 7 weeks old. Once treatment started, thankfully, she was on the road to recovery. But she is faced with lifelong challenges of Spastic Quadriparesis Cerebral Palsy as a result of an extensive brain hemorrhage. Her Cerebral Palsy affects her gross and fine motor skills, coordination, balance, as well as, causing developmental delays, cortical vision impairment and life threatening seizures.
Sabrina has had many hurdles in her life and has a very long and challenging road ahead of her. She uses a wheelchair and walks with assistance in a gait trainer. She uses a stander to help strengthen and promote bone structure formation. She is dependent for activities and care. Despite all of these challenges, she is a happy, fun loving and determined child who continues to make great progress and amaze people. She doesn’t see herself any different than other children and wants to do the same things. It’s heartbreaking when she can’t can because of her physical limitations. Sabrina has demonstrated, with the right therapy, she is capable of making progress and shows that she has so much potential.
With the right therapies, the hope for Sabrina is to get stronger, improve her balance and progress her walking to be efficient and independent while improving her ability to help herself with daily activities. It’s the non-traditional therapies that have the greatest impact on her. Unfortunately, insurance doesn’t cover these. As she grows, it’s getting harder to lift her and her wheelchair in and out of our vehicle as well as lifting and supporting her mobility in and around our home. Sabrina needs an accessible vehicle, home modifications and therapies to help ease the daily strain and give Sabrina the opportunities to become as independent as possible.
Please consider helping Sabrina’s road to independence by making a tax-deductible donation.
